Let’s be honest, toilets are a big part of what we do here at Simply Hire, so we’ve got a bit of a soft spot for them – and a New Year seems like the perfect time to celebrate the loo in all its glory. But here’s the thing: there are loads of different names for toilets? It’s true – and we thought we’d kick off 2025 with a giggle and share some of our favourites!

The classics

• The Loo – A timeless British favourite. Straightforward, polite, and straight to the point.
• The WC – Short for ‘Water Closet.’ Fancy, isn’t it?
• The Bathroom – Even when there’s no bath in sight, it works.
• The Head – Sailor slang that’s made its way into common usage.
• I’m Going to Powder My Nose – first emerged in the early 1900s – a subtle way for women to excuse themselves at a social setting

The fun ones

• The Bog – A solid favourite if you’re keeping things casual.
• The Throne – Because, let’s be honest, you do feel like royalty sitting on it.

Overseas specials

• The John – Popular in the States, but we’ve always wondered… who’s John?

• The Dunny – Borrowed from our Aussie mates. It’s fun to say, too.
• The Restroom – Another Stateside classic for when you need a quick break.

The ones that make us smile

• The Crapper – A nod to Thomas Crapper, the legendary plumber (yes, it’s a real name!).

• The Little Boys’ Room – The polite way to excuse yourself at a party.
• The Thunder Box – For those thunderous moments when you need a bit of peace and quiet afterward!
